Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track right in his path

The dangerous situation occurred on the third circuit when track officials were observed on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys running across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Evidently there's been a miscommunication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a live track marshals can be authorized to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is actively examining the circumstances

"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the governing body

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch marshals were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was shown in that area"

"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
