Kristi Noem Inspects Portland ICE Facility With Right-Wing Figures
The South Dakota governor, acting as the homeland security secretary, conducted a tour the federal immigration enforcement office in Portland, Oregon on a recent weekday. While there, she saw firsthand a small demonstration outside, which stands in stark contrast to the fiery "blockade" described by the former president.
Accompanied by Right-Wing Media Figures
Noem was escorted by a set of conservative influencers who were whisked from the Portland airport to the ICE office in her security detail. DHS has recently produced escalating digital updates showing federal agents performing raids and firing tear gas at protesters.
Gathering Outside
Portland police secured the area outside the building in the Portland's waterfront district before the governor's arrival. A handful demonstrators, featuring one in the outfit of a fowl and another as a shark, were held back.
A song played loudly from a gathering spot close by, with lyrics about Trump and controversial documents. One protester called out to a federal recorder recording from the roof, asking whether the homeland security had been dubbed the "propaganda department".
Press Coverage
Members of the press from independent publications were also kept at the barrier outside, while the conservative personalities in Noem’s entourage—the conservative trio—shared digital content of the governor conducting federal agents in a prayer session inside, offering a pep talk, and telling a member of the state guard to "Prepare".
Background Developments
Noem has previously echoed the president’s assertions that the small band of protesters—who have assembled in their limited groups outside the site since June, including one in an inflatable frog costume—are "extremists" who have placed the office "besieged", making the use of government forces essential.
But, on Saturday, a federal judge in Oregon prevented the former president's effort to nationalize the state's guard, stating that the president’s allegations that the generally nonviolent city was "in flames" were "not based on reality".
Following that, the judge, Karin Immergut—who was appointed to the judiciary by Donald Trump—expanded her order to prohibit National Guard troops from any jurisdiction from being deployed in the city. This occurred after Trump reacted to her previous decision by seeking to use members of the California National Guard to Oregon.
Rising Conflicts
Following Trump focused on the limited yet ongoing protest outside the ICE facility and made unsubstantiated allegations that Portland is "battle-scarred", a growing number of his followers, including MAGA influencers, have arrived to face the individuals.
Several of these confrontations have led to altercations and brawls, prompting detentions by the officers. Nick Sortor was among those arrested after he sought to enter a gathering on a pavement near the ICE facility and was involved in a scuffle over an U.S. flag. Sortor had earlier seized the banner from a protester who was burning it.
The charges against him were eventually dismissed after an protest in right-wing outlets prompted the head of the civil rights division of the Justice Department, Harmeet Dhillon, to warn of a probe of the local police over supposed political bias.
Female protesters the influencer was involved in an altercation with still face charges.
Official Responses
Recently, Governor Tina Kotek, the governor, accused government personnel in the ICE facility of trying to antagonize the demonstrators by using unnecessary levels of chemical irritants in a residential neighborhood and bringing in conservative social media influencers to record the protesters from the roof of the site. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," Kotek said.
A trio of those conservative influencers were described in a police report last month as "counter-protesters" who "constantly return and harass the individuals until they are attacked or subjected to spray" and resist "ongoing instructions from officers to stay away from" the protesters.
Influencer Activities
A conservative personality, a ex-reporter who transitioned as a right-wing commentator after being dismissed from his previous employer for ethical violations, shared video of the secretary viewing from the top of the ICE facility at the limited number of protesters below, including Jack Dickinson who sports a bird outfit to mock Donald Trump. The influencer labeled the clip of Noem viewing the peaceful setting below: "Secretary Noem confronts Antifa militants and a costumed protester".
Despite the difference between the assertions from Trump and Noem that this site is "besieged" from "radicals" and clear visual evidence of a limited group of protesters in non-threatening attire, the personalities with Noem continued to describe the protesters as harmful activists.
Discussion with Law Enforcement
On site, Noem also engaged with the city's top cop, the chief, who has been depicted as "woke" in right-wing outlets for allowing his personnel to detain Sortor. In a social media update on the engagement, Johnson stated that the official had "supported violent ANTIFA militants confronting journalists and officers outside ICE facility".
Noem’s motorcade then exited the facility past a few of protesters on the exterior, including one wearing a animal wearing a headgear.
